I have no words...other than lets get out there and educate these doctors!
I explain to the doctors why wet to drys are substandard. I have had great success with this and all the wound seminars tell the same information. Long term care is much different than hospital care.
I have worked in the hospital for 20 years and worked as WCN for 10 years in the hospital. All of our surgeons write for wound care to decide on treatment. One surgeon still writes for wet to dry which I call and ask may we use this or that and he agrees to it because he sees the results. Keep on talking to the Doctors and educating them to the new wound care treatments out there.
I teach wound classes and this topic comes up each and every time...EDUCATION is the key for the docs but also remembering that you are the patient advocate and causing harm to a patient and providing substandard care is not what anyone wants.
The first thing I do is ask the clinician who is reporting this why this dressing was the physicians dressing of choice. Next question is how 'wet' is their 'wet' to dry.
When I hear wet to dry dressing I want to know the last time the doctor had any education on wound care treatments and what he knew about wound healing.  In our facility nurses are continually educating others about the types of treatments and what they accomplish.  We need to get the word out about the current wound treatment guidelines and helping our patients to heal not do them more harm by destroying good tissue.
Wet to dry must die!
Even worse:  "Dry dressing only, keep it dry".  We have a doctor around here that refuses to anything different. Not open to discussion either.  Super frustrating with poor patient outcomes.
Have you tried showing him some evidence based articles.  I frequently used this article when trying to educate co-workers:  view article

Yes, it's been done.  He has even belittled a WCN saying something along the lines of "you nurses think you know everything, I'm the doctor".  I really would like to fax him this article.  He changed the wound care we were doing on a patient recently to dry dressing only, saying he didn't want any "fancy seaweed impregnated dressings" on it.

how old is this doc??  what a jerk

Middle aged.
