In long term care there is a huge need for quality wound care providers. I found out that many MD's do not like wound care in our area. I became certified and now our local wound clinic does not take our patients unless it is for a debridement. It is nice to be able to educate the family members on normal wound healing and what to expect. I also have found that most nurses know very little about wound care- only how to read and do treatments. I am overwhelmed at how gracious family members, our doctors and other people have been about my wound certification. I get asked often how and where I went, I refer people almost weekly.
Ditto to this. I also work in long term care. I am also amazed at the lack of knowledge in wound care there is. I gradually learned over the past 5 1/2 years by working with our CRNP 's whom are qualified in wound care and ostomy care/I also worked alongside our facility podiatrist and learned alot about diabetic, arterial and venous ulcers. It is always fun to learn about wounds. I just recently recieved my wound certification. I can't wait to learn more. Dot Steigerwald
Congratulation!!!! glad you made it, i'm new in this world of being a treatment nurse. I do post-op sx, wound vac, skin issues, and pressure ulcers treatment. I'm interested to take wound certification someday.
Thank you for your comments. We totally agree about the benefits of wound certification; not only in terms of the career of the practitioner, but also in terms of the standard of care provided to patients and their families. While a wound may be the principal concern of a patient, it can sometimes be overlooked by healthcare professionals who do not have a specific interest in the field. That is why we feel that it is important that practitioners such as yourself take issues of wound management seriously.

We would encourage any of your colleagues who are also interested in achieving wound certification, to review the information provided in the following links. Perhaps they, too, will decide to take the plunge!

Wound Care Certification for Physicians

We wish you every success in your ongoing work.
I frequently tell fellow workers about your on-line site and how I thought the format, presentation, books/materials,CD and everything provided in the course were excellent. I have been bugging our facility podiatrist to take the course for physicians. He is thinking about it, but says he is too busy at this time. After taking the course I am still surprised the # of physcians who still order Betadine and wet to dry dressings! I have copied the Hanging wet to dry dsgs out to dry article for fellow workers.
Thank you for your comments. I am delighted that you enjoyed taking the course with us, and that you found our materials useful. Thank you, too, for spreading the word to your colleagues! I am a firm believer in wound certification, and always encourage wound care professionals to aim for this accolade. Not only does it advance the career of the practitioner, but it also raises the standard of care for patients.

Your podiatrist may be surprised to learn how little time commitment can be required to achieve wound certification. Our online course allows you to work at your own pace, and to spend as little as 1-2 hours per week studying. If he is able to sustain this level of work, he will find himself certified before he knows it! Encourage him to read the following link which gives strong reasons for a physician to become wound certified: http://www.woundeducators.com/wed/wound-care-certification-for-phys...

Good luck in your continuing struggle to win over your colleagues!
How do I obtain this article on "Hanging w-d out to dry"?

My certification is not helping at this time, often I hear "Being certified does not mean anything. Anyone can get certified." What is important to be, is the knowledge I have gained, I just wish in this area, employers would realize, what it means. I not just know what to put on wounds, which is not always important, but I know what we need to look at. I know to look at the whole patient and other illnesses that interfer with the healing.
Keep educating people, that's what I'm doing, I'm even going to get in touch with our senator of our state. We can make a difference.
I agree. That is why a wound network is invaluable. The more practitioners unite and help to promote evidence based wound management, the better chances our patients have!
Ms. Lydia, I need your help....There are so many different exams that it is difficult to know the focus area to concentrate studies on.What does the CWCN exam focus on?
