This question was posed in response to the video on Pyoderma Gangrenosum , highlighting the struggles of the patient in battling this disease.
Q. Will Procellera work on Pyoderma wounds?
My answer:
Hi Terri,
In my experience using Procellera for over 2 years, and now overseeing all the clinical experience with it from providers throughout the country, I would say, that Procellera has been extremely successful in both acute and chronic, full or partial thickness wounds of all etiologies. I found that if a wound was properly prepared , and underlying causes were addressed ( deep infection , nutritional deficits, pressure reduction etc) then Procellera will initiate healing and with many patients with painful wounds, reporting a decrease in their percieved pain while the dressing was on the wound and moist. Even in "disadvantaged" wounds such as in patients with chronic ischemia , diabetes and renal failure, Procellera would often work when nothing else did.
Unfortunately PG is a bad player, and doesn't follow the rules too well. If Procellera is not effective, this is the kind of wound you will see that with. However ,if the patient can achieve a better degree of pain control while providing antimicrobial activity, they typically are more compliant with the regimen and improve their chances of success.
I would say that if your usual "go to " products have not been successful , then Procellera is a very appropriate choice, and the effects are typically evident as early as the first dressing change.
Due to the unique technology - this contact layer becomes a "battery" when wet or active. The microcurrents are distributed over the surface of the wound and to the active skin edge. The effects that are evident within the intial few days ( in chronic / stalled wounds) include increase in granulation and early epithelialization at the active edges. The wounds will look "goopy" and may be malodorous but this is TYPICAL AND DOES NOT NECESSARILY indicate infection .
Unfortunately , no guarantees in wound care for anything, but my motto has always been ,
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it... but if it ain't working , you better do something different." In the world of wound dressings, for me , Procellera is that something different.
